Blogmas Day 6 | Books I DNF’d in 2022 pt 1

Hey honeybees! I’ve mentioned this before but I am a huge fan of DNFing books. Don’t like it? Don’t waste your time. I occasionally push through and try to finish and sometimes I enjoy them in the end (mostly I hate them). Here are some of the books I just couldn’t get through.

Disclaimer: not finishing the book doesn’t mean that it isn’t a good book! Sometimes I DNF books based on my moods or if I’m just too busy to focus on them. This is in no way a mark against the book (well, in most cases) but rather just a list of books I didn’t finish.

A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

Why: It’s so long for no reason and the MC is Bella Swan level of flat and boring.

Malice by Heather Walter

Why: Just couldn’t get into it. Might try again later.

VenCo by Cherie Dimaline

Why: H*rry P*tter was referenced in the first chapter for no reason and there’s really no excuse to still be circulating this TERF creation. I emailed the publicist about it but got no response. I’m really disappointed but I’m not going to support anything/anyone aligned with JKR. These references make me really uncomfortable and I know they trigger even worse reactions in others in the trans community.

A Darker Shade of Magic by VE Shwab

Why: I can’t stand Lila and it’s not that interesting when compared to the other books.

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Why: I just didn’t find it interesting. I loved Gods of Jade and Shadow but I’ve DNF’d all of her adult books that I tried.

The Gingerbread House by Catriona McPherson

Why: Didn’t care for the writing and it had an uninteresting plot. I got about 30% through the audio before I called it quits.

The Circle by Dave Eggers

Why: So long and for what? I really enjoyed the movie but the book was unnecessarily long. Interesting, but we weren’t getting to the point fast enough.

The Glass Spare by Lauren DeStefano

Why: I just wasn’t interested in this. It was my first DNF of the year and I remember getting about halfway through but just not having that spark that you need to enjoy a book.

This isn’t nearly all of them but I didn’t want to make this list too long and it’s kind of hard to find the nonphysical reads since I delete them off my Goodreads TBR if I DNF them for good.

Thank you for reading! Find me on Twitter, Instagram, and Goodreads for more bookish content and chats. See you soon!
