Hello again honeybees! Have I mentioned that I keep writing blog posts and not finishing them? You have no idea how many TBRs, wrap-ups, and reviews I have sitting in my drafts. Ugh. Hence the Blogmas posts to hopefully clear some posts up and get my reviews up.
So here are a few mini reviews for the Kindle Unlimited books I read during a binge a few months ago. I was in a bit of a slump and KU novellas seemed to be the only things that I was able to read for a good few weeks. I’m not 100% sure if all of these are still on KU but I’ll post the links just in case you want to check any of these out.
The Dragon’s Bride (A Deal With a Demon, #1) by Katee Robert
I trust Katee Robert. I don’t think she’ll let me down. Was this as great as Neon Gods? No way. But it was still really enjoyable and a super quick read! Despite being a short 200ish pages, there was a surprising amount of depth to the characters.
Monster smut isn’t everyone’s vibe, and while this wasn’t my first time reading it (thanks Wattpad lol) this was still a bit uncomfortable. I think Katee Robert did a good job with it though? She’s a talented writer, no doubt. I’m excited to read the rest of her work.
The Beast (Monsters and Beauties, #1) by Jenika Snow
I love Beauty and the Beast. I will read any retelling I find (and I have, to varying results *gags in ACOTAR*). This was um…horrible. I’m not one to bash books often. I just finished the first draft of my novel and I’m pretty sure it’s a steaming pile of garbage–who am I to talk? This book was hardly readable, though, and the smut scenes were painful to get through. The writing was mostly bad and could’ve used a few more rounds of editing. It’s also very loose for a retelling and it felt more like the author watched the Disney movie 100 times as “research” rather than try to make an authentic retelling.
The Never King (Vicious Lost Boys, #1) by Nikki St. Crowe
This was such a short book and I dragged on reading it, which I think contributed to my low rating and distate for the novella. I wasn’t sure if I would like it to begin with, but some of my friends had rated it favorably and I wanted a short pallet cleanser before jumping into my next read. The plot had something there, and I was interested in the world and Pan for a good bit in the beginning. I hated the MC (something Darling) who was so flat and moldable, reminiscent of Bella from Twilight. The smut scenes were alright. The side characters didn’t do much to add to my enjoyment. I ended the book so glad that it was over and ultimately rated it one star.
My reads went from good to horrible very quickly. Maybe it would’ve been better if I were in a normal slump where I just didn’t read at all? I’m not sure. But I’m glad I put my KU subscription to use and got to try these out.
Have you read any of these books? Are they on your TBR? Do you have any KU recommendations? I’d honestly love some recs, I need to fill up my library.
