Reading Rush 2020 Wrap Up | This Ship Sunk Real Quick

Hello again honeybees! The time has come and gone, and now I’m waiting for it again. I loved the Reading Rush because so many people participate across all different platforms and it truly feels like a huge community. However, in light of recent events, I don’t see myself participating in the reading rush again. I can’t stand by performative allyship and continued offense to marginalized people.

While I didn’t hit the 7 book goal, I’m still pretty proud of my reading. Here’s a breakdown of each of the days:

Monday – Day 1

Books finished: 1

Lol I can’t even remember. I had to look through my Instagram stories archive because I practically live on there. Monday was a very lazy day. I was feeling depressed and just unproductive so I decided to pick up Manifesting With The Law of Attraction by Monique Joiner Siedlak. This was a super quick read on manifestation and Law of Attraction and just went over a few key things and some brief guides on how to do stuff like build a vision board.

Tuesday – Day 2

Books finished: 1

This one kind of doesn’t count because I’ve been reading Lobizona for weeks, but I’m adding it in here due to the fact that it was finished within the reading rush week. But yes, I finished Lobizona by Romina Garber and it was the best and worst thing to happen to me this reading year. Best because it was the best book I’ve read all year. Worst because it was the best book I’ve read all year and now it’s over. (The sequel is coming eventually). My review will be up once my brain doesn’t turn to a heart-eyed mush thinking of Lobizona.

I started reading Beautifully Cruel by J.T. Geissinger but only got about 20% through before I crashed out.

Wednesday – Day 3

Books finished: 0

If I’m remembering correctly, I had a migraine this day. I also registered for classes for uni so that was new and stressful. No reading was to be had this day.

Thursday – Day 4

Books finished: 1

My loan of Pet by Akwaeke Emezi came through on Libby and I was able to listen to the audiobook! The audio was amazing! The narrator was a dream to listen to and the story was so diverse, magical, and full of important conversations. I’ll have more of my thoughts on this title coming in a post soon.

That was basically it for this day. I was mostly busy with blog tour stuff and managed to read this in between all of that.

Friday – Day 5

Books finished: 1

On Friday I finally picked Beautifully Cruel by J.T. Geissinger back up and devoured it in one sitting. I mean, can you blame me? It was hot hot hot. The pacing was actually pretty good too and I found myself invested in the characters beyond their psychical relationship. I figured this would be a fast read but it flew by within a few hours.

Saturday – Day 6

Books finished: 0

I took pictures for Instagram and blogged but my mind was bouncing around too much to settle on a book to read. My library holds on I Wish You All The Best and Get A Life, Chloe Brown both came in at the same time, which definitely contributed to some of the reading anxiety.

Sunday – Day 7

Books finished: 0

I started Honeybee by Trista Mateer and I was expecting it to be emotional but in a very different way, so I was taken by surprise with this one. Because it was very heavy, I decided not to rush myself and not finish it in one day.

Total books read: 4

That’s really not too bad. I’m proud of myself for reaching that number and I definitely am in the reading mood now.

I don’t think I’ll participate in the Reading Rush again because of the hosts’ recent actions but I’ll be sure to promote more diverse readathons in the future.

Did you participate? How many books did you read? If you didn’t participate, how are you? 🙂

Thank you for reading! I hope you enjoyed this post. Please consider following for more posts like this! You can also find me on Instagram, Twitter, and Goodreads, buy me a cup of coffee on ko-fi, or you can buy books I no longer want on Depop. Thanks again for reading! Bye for now honeybees.

Love, Destiny

Congrats on finishing so many books!! I’ve been wanting to read Lobizona and Pet for a bit now, I’m so glad to hear that you enjoyed them both!! Totally agree with what you’re saying on the disappointment with the recent events surrounding the event, I had fun participating but also don’t think I will next year. Overall, though, I’m glad you had a good week! ❤️

I’ve never partaken in the Reading Rush, but I’m so disappointed for you and everyone else who was participating! It’s a shame that you had to drop out of the challenge, but performative allyship and ignorant remarks shouldn’t be tolerated, and you totally did the right thing. On the bright side, Lobizona sounds great and I can’t wait to read your review for it!

Oh The Reading Rush… I just… I’m at a loss at the host’s behaviour. The irony of the subject matter of Such a Fun Age and their purely performative allyship is almost incredulous
