Thrust into leadership upon the death of his emperor father, young Prince Ahkin feels completely unready for his new position. Though his royal blood controls the power of the sun, he’s now re- sponsible for the lives of all the Chicome people. And despite all Ahkin’s efforts, the sun is fading—and the end of the world may be at hand.

For Mayana, the only daughter of the Chicome family whose blood controls the power of water, the old emperor’s death may mean that she is next. Prince Ahkin must be married before he can ascend the throne, and Mayana is one of six noble daughters presented to him as a possible wife. Those who are not chosen will be sacrificed to the gods.

Only one girl can become Ahkin’s bride. Ahkin feels an immediate connection with Mayana, but the gods themselves may be against them. Both recognize that the ancient rites of blood that keep the gods appeased may be harming the Chicome more than they help. As a bloodred comet and the fading sun bring a growing sense of dread, only two young people may hope to change their world.

Rich in imagination and romance, and based on the legends and history of the Aztec and Mayan people, The Seventh Sun brings to vivid life a world on the edge of apocalyptic disaster.

Oh this book. It started off with a bang and page after page continued to live up to the amazing sounding premise. The plot immediately pulls you in, the descriptions and scenes keep you entranced.

“‘You have a tender heart, but you need to learn to silence it and do your duty to your people.'”

I loved Mayana from the beginning. She’s caring, rebellious, and witty. Her fire and kind soul made her chapters the most interesting from the very beginning, and I instantly connected to her. From the beginning she jumped out to me as a Disney Princess sort of character, and I loved it. She was three dimensional and daring, and definitely made it onto my favorite characters list.

The conversation of power and duty is always my favorite in novels like these. The royal aspect of this book did not disappoint and I loved seeing both the lavish part of demigod life and the hard expectations placed on royals. The competition aspect of the Ahkin finding a wife was so exciting and definitely a unique aspect of the novel.

This book instantly made me have feelings. There wasn’t a single page that was boring or lacking in any way. The descriptions of setting, food, rituals, etc, were so beautiful and well written that I felt instantly engrossed every time I opened the book and didn’t want to close the book. I highly recommend this book to really anyone who loves fantasy, The Bachelor, The Selection series, and Aztec and Mayan culture.

Keep reading to see my playlist based on story and the feelings it inspired in me!
