ARC Review: Breach by W.L. Goodwater

Title: Breach by W.L. Goodwater (Cold War Magic: Book One)

Release Date: November 6, 2018

Rating: 4/5

The first novel in a new Cold War fantasy series, where the Berlin Wall is made entirely of magic. When a breach unexpectedly appears in the wall, spies from both sides swarm to the city as World War III threatens to spark.

The wall was built for peace, but it is quickly failing. Karen, an American magician, is called to Germany to fix the wall, but soon discovers all of it’s secrets. The wall is more than a separation between two parts of a country, it’s lies and secrets kept from the public, from the CIA. And Karen is thrown into the middle of a war zone.

I was so surprised by this book! The politics and the magical realism was by far my favorite part. When I read historical fiction, I tend to gravitate towards WWII so this was right up my alley. The discussion of sexism and the complexity of the “villain” was very well done.

As much as I enjoyed this book, I wished there had been more explanation of the magic system because the occasional history on magic got a bit confusing when trying to focus on the developing plot. The novel could have been shorter but the frequent plot twists helped keep me engaged.

Overall, I enjoyed Breach more than I was expecting to, and I’m very happy to have read it!

I was provided a copy of this book by Penguin’s First To Read program in exchange for an honest review. This in no way affects my feelings on this novel.

If you like Historical Fiction or magical realism then I definitely recommend you try Breach! I believe it’s classified as adult literature but I found it very easy to read. If you’re interested in reading adult lit or prefer lighter novels, check this one out!
